History
Cleveland State traces its historical roots to 1870, when a Cleveland YMCA began to offer free classes. A YMCA program was formalized around 1881, reorganized in 1906 as a Association Institute, & became the Cleveland School of Technology, later renamed Fenn College. Fenn College expanded, ingesting above many buildings in the area, including an automobile dealership in what is now Stillwell Hall. Within 1964 Cleveland State appropriated the buildings, faculty, staff, & software of Fenn College, the personal institution of 2,500 students, and became the public university.
Cleveland-Marshall College of Law
A Cleveland-Marshall College of Law traces its origins to the institution of Cleveland Law School inside 1897 as a 1st evening school of law in the state & one of the number 1 to admit women & minorities. Inside 1946, Cleveland Law School merged with a John Marshall School of Law, founded around 1916, to become Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Cleveland-Marshall became section of Cleveland State University inside 1969.
One of a best known alumni of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law is Tim Russert, host of television program Meet the Press.
Location
CSU's independent campus inside downtown Cleveland is bounded on the east and west by Interstate 9& 18th Street, severally; & by Chester Avenue to the north and Euclid Avenue on the south. Admissions policy
Until recently, a university maintained a policy of open admission for even completely undergrad software online; even so, the university is phasing-out this policy in favour of basic admission standards for good-whale & virtually all section-half-time students, permitting others to run basic coursework or shifting the two to local community colleges.
Academic term
Historically, a university divided its school year into trimesters; in 1997, CSU changed the academic term to division by semesters.
Athletics and sport
A sports teams' nickname is the Vikings. A school colors are green and white. Cleveland State fields varsity teams in xvii sports, including cheerleading, but virtually all notably, doesn't have a football team. Virtually all of the teams compete in the Horizon League. A men's basketball team achieved the greatest ill fame within 1986 when seeded 14th in the NCAA tournament, it upset heavily favorite Three-seed Indiana and St. Joseph's before being beaten by Navy by one point, an unprecedented achievement for such a low seed.
